I remember the first time I went shooting with a real camera. I navigated the one-way streets of my hometown, found an open parking spot, and began trekking down sidewalks I'd never walked down before. Until then, I'd only taken photos on my iPhone. It was overcast, and the sun was threatening to set in the next couple hours.
Every corner I turned, I snapped a photo. Houses, walls, trees, berries - everything was jumping out at me, shouting, "Pick me! I want to be in a photo!" And I yielded, because how could I say no? I realized then that I had been overlooking so many beautiful things, simply because I never took the time to stand still and see them. With my phone put away and nothing else with me but my camera, my eyes were opened.
Will anyone else ever see all those photos from Downtown Fredericksburg? Probably not. Regardless, they stand out as landmarks in my life. They signify a big change of direction, and I will always look back on them fondly.
Peter McKinnon, a well renowned photographer, once said, "The best camera is the one you have with you." Rarely will you find me without one in my backpack. It is an irreplaceable tool that helps me capture the world around me.
Every photo comes with a memory, and I love making memories. Whether I'm reading a new book, spending time with my friends and family, or trying out a new recipe, there's probably a camera nearby.
